“Five months removed from his debut album, and Mac was already rolling out his darker image. There was a considerable amount of change when Macadelic arrived in 2013. Heads represented the financial success, but tails is the dreaded critics, reviews and fans who were judging him as a person rather than the music. For someone so invested in his music, it was depressing to have both sides of the coin at once. It was a highly successful debut album, but critically it was disappointing. Mac’s shift started after Blue Slide Park. The latter was never shy about his codeine usage and many attribute his addiction as a contributing factor to one of the best stretches of any rap career ever. Mac Miller went through a time frame where he was using drugs left and right, abusing them, and seeing similar effects to Lil Wayne’s rise. A lot of what I connect to has depth and honesty to it, which translates into a lot of dark times for an artist. That approach only works so much, but it does suck to grow fond of an album and hope to continue to see that path in the future. The beauty of art is that they don’t just keep rehashing the same ideas and hope that people continue to enjoy it. Any real artist is going to go through different stages in their career, and we as fans grow to love one version that is only around for a period of time.
